The Song Room Success at Orelia Primary School

At Orelia Primary School in Western Australia, an inspiring transformation is unfolding. What began as a daunting challenge for teacher Manjeet Singh—transitioning from a generalist educator to a specialist music and arts teacher—has evolved into a story of growth, resilience, and passion, thanks to the support of The Song Room.

From Generalist to Specialist: Manjeet’s Journey

When Manjeet was first assigned to teach music, she was stepping into unfamiliar territory. “I was a bit shocked because I only knew a little bit of music from what we learned at university,” she admitted. However, with the mentorship of The Song Room’s Teaching Artist Gabbi Fusco, she has developed the skills and confidence to independently lead engaging music lessons.

Rather than nervously relying on textbooks, Manjeet has learned to embrace creativity in her teaching. Gabbi’s encouragement has helped her tailor lessons based on student interests, making learning more dynamic and meaningful. Together, they introduced students to bush ballads, allowing them to compose original pieces inspired by traditional Australian folk music.

Their collaborative efforts have also extended beyond music. With the support of the school leadership, Manjeet now teaches both Visual Arts and Music, finding innovative ways to integrate the two.

The Impact on Students

The challenges at Orelia Primary School are significant. Students come from a variety of backgrounds, many affected by trauma, ADHD, and family issues. Traditional learning methods often fail to fully engage them, but music and the arts have provided an accessible and healing outlet.

“Some students who struggle academically in literacy and numeracy find success in the arts,” Manjeet explained. “They feel like they can have a go. Even my non-verbal students want to participate. They rush to grab their instruments and sit in the front row.”

Gabbi’s background as a Music Therapist has played a key role in shaping this inclusive learning environment. By incorporating well-being practices into her sessions, she has helped Manjeet create a safe space where all students can express themselves creatively.

Building a Stronger School Community

The Song Room program has had a ripple effect beyond the music classroom, fostering a school-wide appreciation for the arts. “At first, I felt isolated as the only music and arts teacher,” Manjeet reflected. “But now, my colleagues are interested in getting involved—some play guitar, others play piano, and we’re even talking about forming a staff band!”

The enthusiasm has also reached families, with parents taking a keen interest in their children’s artistic progress. “It’s no longer just me driving the program—it’s become a whole-school effort,” she said.

Looking Ahead: A Sustainable Future for Arts Learning

One of the key goals of The Song Room program is to ensure sustainability, equipping teachers with the skills to independently deliver high-quality arts education. Manjeet and Gabbi’s mentorship dynamic has been instrumental in achieving this, with Gabbi supporting Manjeet in writing the school’s Operational Plan for music in 2025.

“Having Gabbi’s support has made a huge difference,” Manjeet said. “Now, I feel empowered to keep growing and developing my own style as a music teacher.”

The partnership between Manjeet and The Song Room demonstrates the transformative power of arts education—not just for students, but for educators and entire school communities. Through deeper learning, greater engagement and creativity, Orelia Primary School is proving that the arts are not just an add-on to education but an essential pillar of student well-being and success.
