Primary Production | New Professional Songwriting Experience for Schools!
Primary Production | New Professional Songwriting Experience for Schools!
Primary Production is more than a music program. It’s a rare opportunity for primary school aged students to work alongside music industry professionals to write, record and produce original songs.

Designed to mirror a real-world music team, Primary Production introduces students to music industry roles and creative pathways. Students collaborate with a singer, songwriter or music producer and a Song Room Teaching Artist to write, record and produce an original song, finishing with a professionally produced demo. The workshops take place over two intensive, consecutive days for Year 5–6 students in Victoria.
Launching in 2026 as part of The Song Room’s Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series (VCES), Primary Production connects primary schools, professional songwriters, producers and Teaching Artists in a shared creative experience that benefits students, educators and creatives alike.
What This Means for Schools
Primary Production offers high-quality arts learning experience that is easy to implement and rich in impact.
Schools gain:
- Two full days of on-site delivery
- Access to a professional creative team, including a songwriter, producer and Teaching Artist
- A small-group model that supports engagement, inclusion and student voice
- Finished digital tracks to share with the school community
The program is designed to complement classroom learning while offering something students don’t often get: time, space and expert support to create something entirely their own.
For schools seeking to inspire confident, creative learners — particularly those who thrive through hands-on and collaborative learning — Primary Production provides a powerful opportunity.
An Opportunity for Artists to Make an Impact
Primary Production also creates paid, supported opportunities for contemporary music creators to apply their skills in an educational context.
Artists and producers:
- Work directly with students as creative mentors
- Collaborate with Teaching Artists and classroom teachers
- Share real-world music-making processes in an accessible way
- Develop experience delivering inclusive, school-based creative learning
With planning time built into the program and clear child-safety and quality frameworks in place, creatives are supported to focus on what they do best: guiding young people through the creative process.
Creative Learning That’s Inclusive by Design
The program is intentionally structured to support diverse learners, including twice-exceptional students, CALD learners, First Nations students and students with disability.
Small production groups ensure every student is seen and heard, while flexible facilitation allows artists and Teaching Artists to adapt to different learning needs and strengths.
For schools, this means confidence that all students can participate meaningfully.
For artists, it’s an opportunity to develop inclusive facilitation skills and work with a wide range of learners.
Fully Funded, High-Quality Delivery
Primary Production is fully funded for eligible Victorian Government schools through the Victorian Department of Education’s Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series (VCES).
Why It Matters
Primary Production brings schools and artists together around a shared purpose: empowering young people through creativity.
Schools provide students a standout learning experience. Artists extend their practice, build new skills, and make a lasting impact in classrooms.
Together, these partnerships create confident learners, inspired educators and stronger connections between education and the creative industries.
