Primary Production Launches in Western Sydney — Schools and Music Creators Invited to Take Part

The Song Room is excited to launch Primary Production NSW, an industry‑first music program available now to primary schools and contemporary music creators in Western Sydney. Students will work alongside professional songwriters, producers and Teaching Artists to write, record and produce original music.

Primary Production: Students take part in professional songwriting workshop

This new pilot will create meaningful opportunities for both young people and the creative workforce in Western Sydney by strengthening creative learning and expanding pathways for local music creators. Registrations for this groundbreaking pilot program are now open for schools and music creators.

The fully funded program is supported by Sound NSW and delivered in partnership with L-FRESH The LION (curator), Village Boy Entertainment and community consultation partner Outloud.

This isn’t just another music class; it is a real-world creative experience designed to mirror a professional music team. Delivered during Term 3 or 4 this year over two immersive days on-site, students work in small production groups with a practicing songwriter, producer, and an experienced Teaching Artist to take an original song from initial creative spark to a release-ready digital track. The program provides the perfect platform for young learners to author sounds that reflect their unique lives and cultures, while giving local music creators a paid, supported opportunity to mentor the next generation.

What This Means for Schools

Primary Production offers a high-quality arts learning experience that is easy to implement and rich in impact. Successful NSW Government Primary Schools in Western Sydney gain:

  • Two full days of on-site program delivery.
  • Access to a professional creative team, including a practicing songwriter, producer, and a Teaching Artist from The Song Room.
  • A small-group production model (4 students per group) that supports engagement, inclusion, and student voice.
  • Finished digital tracks your school can share with the community.

The program is designed to complement classroom learning while offering something students don’t often get: the time, space, and expert support to create something entirely their own. For schools seeking to inspire confident, creative learners — particularly those who have a love for arts learning — Primary Production provides a powerful opportunity.

An Opportunity for Artists to Make an Impact

Primary Production NSW also creates supported opportunities for contemporary music creators to apply their skills in an educational context. Artists and producers:

  • Work directly with students as creative mentors
  • Collaborate with Teaching Artists and classroom teachers
  • Share real-world music-making processes in an accessible way
  • Develop experience delivering inclusive, school-based creative learning.

With a half-day planning window built into the program to brief creatives and ensure child safety training is current, music creators are fully supported to focus on guiding young people through the creative process.

Creative Learning That’s Inclusive by Design

The program is intentionally structured to support diverse learners, actively engaging First Nations students, CALD communities, students with disability, and young people in Western Sydney. Small production groups ensure every voice is heard and supported, while the creative team flexibly adapts to diverse abilities and learning profiles. For schools, this means confidence that all students can participate meaningfully and achieve success.

Fully Funded, High-Quality Delivery

Primary Production NSW is proudly funded by Sound NSW. There is no cost to NSW Government Primary Schools in Western Sydney who are successful in obtaining a place in this program. All equipment is provided, as the team brings the laptops, instruments, and production software needed for delivery.

Why It Matters

Primary Production NSW brings schools and artists together around a shared purpose: empowering young people through creativity. Schools provide students a standout learning experience, while classroom teachers gain practical strategies and free access to optional ARTS:LIVE resources upon request. Artists extend their practice, build new skills, and make a lasting impact in classrooms. Together, these partnerships create confident learners, inspired educators, and stronger connections between education and the creative industries.
