Harmony Through Creativity: Collingwood English Language School’s Artistic Journey
Their Story:
Song Room students from Collingwood English Language School (CELS) embarked on an artistic journey to create a banner that celebrates the themes of community and belonging. Through collage and painting, students collaborated to create a vibrant artwork for Harmony Day, an event dedicated to bringing students from diverse backgrounds together.
This project was not just about making art; it was about expressing their individual and collective stories. Through art, the students set out to explore what harmony means to them. The final artwork featured cutouts of the students’ hands and a tree branching out into ideas of kindness, respect and learning: all themes which students felt were important to them in school and in life.
Why it’s special:
This project is a powerful testament to how art can support social and emotional learning while building a strong, inclusive community. Displayed proudly in the school, the artwork has had a tangible impact on the students. It has significantly boosted their confidence in self-expression, engagement, and sense of belonging.
As one Song Room Teaching Artist observed, “Students were very excited to attend the sessions, they openly expressed gratitude. With support, they worked cooperatively with others. By the 4th session, children were striving to articulate their feelings and interpretations of expressive artworks. Many students wanted to tell their stories about feelings.”
