CASE STUDY | Empowering Educators, Enriching Classrooms, Creating Lasting Impact
At Orelia Primary School in Western Australia, an inspiring transformation is unfolding. What began as a daunting challenge for teacher, Manjeet Singh, who was transitioning from a generalist educator to become a specialist music and arts teacher with limited experience, has evolved into
a story of growth, resilience and passion, thanks to the support of her Song Room program.
Through The Song Room’s Transformational Learning through Creativity program, Manjeet received in-class mentoring from Teaching Artist, Gabbi Fusco. Manjeet gained crucial training in music theory, notation and curriculum standards, learning to integrate key musical concepts effectively and strengthening her teaching practice.
This strong collaborative partnership has helped Manjeet stretch her capabilities, building her confidence in delivering high-quality arts education independently. Gabbi’s background as a Music Therapist has also supported Manjeet in incorporating wellbeing principles into her teaching, ensuring a holistic approach to student engagement and development.
A highlight of Manjeet’s journey was a ukulele class for Year 4 and 5 students, where the classroom buzzed with energy as she modelled self-regulation and a growth mindset. Learning the instrument alongside her students, she fosters an environment where every child feels confident and valued. She emphasises the wellbeing benefits of arts learning, noting that no matter the challenges students face, they consistently experience a “win” in her class.
Manjeet’s experience underscores the broader impact of The Song Room’s programs in developing a sustainable and skilled arts education workforce. By upskilling teachers, the program ensures that high-quality arts learning continues long after the teaching artists have left, creating lasting change by embedding music and creativity into the fabric of Australian schools.
In 2024, The Song Room’s Transformational Learning through Creativity program was funded by the Australian Government’s Office for the Arts in eight schools across NSW, Victoria and Western Australia.
