Research shows that high levels of parental and community involvement are strongly related to improving students’ education and social outcomes.
Positive family and community involvement has a major impact on classroom learning, regardless of the social or cultural background of the family.
Knowing this, the Commonwealth Department of Employment, Education and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) has funded The Song Room to pilot arts and music programs to encourage Indigenous parents and communities to become more involved with local schools and organisations.
“Our students have been incredibly lucky to have been given the opportunity to have this program. They have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I have never seen them so focussed, proud and confident.” Principal, North Parmelia School
These programs have had significant effects. Indigenous children attend school more, they feel much better about themselves and others, and they are much more involved with their communities.
