Geelong schools celebrate The Song Room’s TLC program | Transformational Learning through Creativity.

Geelong schools celebrate The Song Room’s TLC program | Transformational Learning through Creativity.

In a community learning extravaganza, students and teachers from three Geelong schools took part in The Song Room’s Big Day of Learning to connect and celebrate three years of arts learning in the region.

Students enjoying arts learning in music

Geelong East Primary School, Newcomb Primary School and Whittington Primary School came together in a huge day of creativity to mark the completion of The Song Room’s three-year TLC program in Geelong. Grade 3 and 4 students from each school worked with the internationally acknowledged Geelong illustrator, Kat Rattray, and our talented Song Room Teaching Artists, to explore character and storytelling through the arts.

Gathering in Geelong’s cultural hub at the iconic Geelong Dome Library, students were divided into mixed-school workshops to learn drawing, dance, drama and music. Any shyness about working with students from other schools was quickly overcome as they shared ideas that brought worlds and narratives to life through the arts. Each student participated in multiple activities that allowed them to explore, expand and shine in their own way.

“I think it was really interesting how, Kat grabbed a bunch of letters from the bin and could make a character just from using that. My favourite part was the drawing activity…actually…I enjoyed it all!” Student, Newcomb Primary School.

“I liked drawing with Kat, especially the penguin — I used two circles plus triangles to draw it.” Student, Whittington Primary School

TLC is designed to transform student learning, teacher practice, school and local community culture over a continuous 3-year period. Sequential delivery and long timeframes make this program both impactful and sustainable. The Big Day of Learning was the culmination of the students’ learnings and provided an opportunity for deeper community connection through participation in collaborative art experiences.

The day did not disappoint. Designed around student learning and wellbeing, The Big Day of Learning connected learners, teachers and supporters in the Geelong area. Teachers joined students in the activities while local supporters dropped in throughout the day to enjoy the fun. Thank you to our supporters, partners, and friends of The Song Room who joined us.

Special thanks to Give Where you Live Foundation, who have been supporting Song Room programs at schools in Geelong for many years and were instrumental in supporting this very special day.

The Song Room is proud to deliver our TLC program in the Geelong region with the help and support of Anthony Costa Foundation, Geelong Community Foundation, Percy Baxter Charitable Trust, the Victorian Department of Education and of course Give Where you Live Foundation. Thank you!
