Two new board members join The Song Room – an award-winning performer and a First Nations education advocate.
We are thrilled to announce that Ali McGregor and Hayley McQuire will join our Board of Directors with a commitment to bridging the education equity gap faced by Australian children experiencing disadvantage. The two passionate leaders bring a wealth of experience and expertise from the Arts and Education sectors to The Song Room.
Ali McGregor is an Australian opera singer, producer and an award-winning cabaret performer. She has performed everywhere from Glastonbury to Carnegie Hall and is one of the most in demand performers on the international festival circuit. She was nominated for an ARIA award in 2014 and in 2015 was awarded a Green Room Award for her contribution to cabaret. She was awarded the Helpmann Award for Best Cabaret Performance in 2019.
Ali understands the power of the Arts to bring joy and to connect a community. She says, “I have long been an advocate for music and arts education and an enthusiastic supporter of The Song Room. I am honoured to be joining the Board of Directors to help work towards the goal to ensure all children in Australia get the opportunity to thrive through music, arts and culture.”
Hayley McQuire is a proud Darumbal and South Sea Islander woman from Rockhampton Central Queensland and is a passionate advocate for Indigenous social justice and ending education inequality. She is the National Coordinator and Co-Founder of the National Indigenous Youth Education Coalition, an Indigenous-led organisation focused on asserting Indigenous rights to education. She is the current Co-Chair of Learning Creates Australia, a growing alliance of people and organisations who are committed to lifting Australia through a new era of learning.
Learning and connecting with First Nations history, culture and knowledge in a culturally sensitive way is essential to build well-being, respect, and a sense of belonging in school communities. “I am truly honoured to support the work of The Song Room.” Hayley says, “Arts education allows young people so many different forms and mediums to express their creativity and very identity.”
“The Board is delighted with the appointment of Ali McGregor and Hayley McQuire to The Song Room Board of Directors,” says Chair of The Song Room, Anthony Mackay AM. “Ali and Hayley bring passion, motivation and expert credentials that complement our committed board. The Arts plays a vital role in shaping a better world by providing children with the opportunity to explore and connect, and to find the richness of what it is to be human. Helping to develop creative, courageous and compassionate young people has never felt so important.”
