The Song Room becomes Australia’s first WISE Awards recipient
The Song Room is pleased to announce that we have been awarded a WISE (World Innovation Summit for Education) award for outstanding contribution to education.
WISE was founded in 2009 in Qatar as a means to promote global leadership and innovation in education.
“WISE is a response to the necessity of revitalizing education and providing a global platform for the development of new ideas and solutions. Through the annual Summit and a growing range of year-round activities, WISE enables thinkers, policymakers and practitioners to share ideas that result in real benefits of society through education.”
The Song Room Director of Programs, Deborah Nicolson says, “It’s very exciting that this award has coincided with the tenth year of our teaching artist program. Innovation is the key to The Song Room’s longevity. It’s a thrill to be part of such a dedicated team who all share the same ethos and can take pride in their role in this achievement.”
A jury comprised of education leaders, chaired by H.E. Sheikh Abdulla bin Ali Al-Thani, Chairman of WISE, selected the six winners from a shortlist of fifteen finalists, chosen from hundreds of applications from around the globe (the Song Room is the first Australian organization to win this prestigious accolade).
H.E. Sheikh Abdulla bin Ali Al-Thani remarked: “these initiatives demonstrate how transformative educational programs not only bring real change to the classroom, but can also have a wider influence in communities and society”.
Other winners include Street Children ‚Äì Reintegration through Education (Egypt), Me & My City (Finland), Educate Girls (India), We Love Reading (Jordan) and Alternate Education for Rural Development (Peru/Spain). The 2014 WISE Summit in Qatar is aptly themed, “Imagine-Create-Learn: Creativity at the Heart of Education”, and will see The Song Room representatives meet with policy makers, practitioners and thinkers from the global education community.
One of the highest acknowledgments of educational innovation in the world, The WISE Award represents a strong endorsement of the significant work of The Song Room and our suite of programs. This recognition as a global innovator in education is a testament to the hard work, diligence and innovation of The Song Room team, its Teaching Artists, and many art and education partners nationally who have helped deliver engaging, innovative arts education experiences for over 350,000 children across Australia.
