Sharing Stories in Perth
The Song Room, in conjunction with the City of Perth, has developed a number of resources for the communities attending all of our Reading Bug programs in Perth.
Personalities from Perth were asked to read children’s books written by Western Australian writers, which will now be presented to participating playgroups in DVD format. The Song Room approached WA’s Fremantle Press who were only too happy to support the project by releasing five books to us to use to create these resources.
The next step was to select five local identities to read the books. The following inspiring people graciously agreed to donate their time to assist the project:
- Sally Morgan: Writer
- Lisa Scafidi: Mayor of Perth
- Alec Coles: CEO of the Western Australian Museum
- James McHale: ABC News Reader
- Stefano Carboni: Director of the Art Gallery of Western Australia
Filming began in October with the City of Perth providing the film crew, director and editor for the project.
On Wednesday October 23rd during Children’s Week WA, TSR launched the short films at Northbridge Piazza with an event titled ‘Sharing Stories’. All of the communities attending our Reading Bug programs were invited to the event, the City of Perth even paid for buses to bring the communities to and from the Northbridge Piazza.
After the screening was an interactive performance by the fabulous African drumming and marimba group Village Vibes. The band used music and songs from around the world to tell the story of one family’s journey from their home in Africa to a new life in Perth WA. Children, parents, teachers and staff joined them by dancing on the stage and in the square in front of Northbridge Piazza. It was a powerful celebration of storytelling through song and dance.
A special thank you to the City of Perth, who provided The Song Room with over $15,000 of in-kind funding to support this project.
