‘My Story’ – The Mackay Creative Connections Project
On the 11th of August, The Song Room, in partnership with Rio Tinto Hail Creek, successful launched the Mackay Creative Communities Project at Mackay’s Regional Art Gallery, ArtSpace. The launch brought together the semester’s work of children and the wider communities from Mackay Central State School, Fitzgerald State School and Victoria Park State Schools as well as an outreach partnership with the Mackay Special School. Community members and neighbourhood groups collectively told the stories of over 500 Mackay Residents.
Over 800 children and community members contributed to the launch by making postcards depicting their individual stories with themes around diversity, cultural backgrounds, identity and place in Mackay.
All submitted postcards where included in this exhibition and collectively they tell a beautiful story of the Mackay communities’ diverse and multicultural history, its favourite places, dreams and hopes and unique Australian identity. The resulting exhibition, along with a short film produced by local film company Crossroad Arts, was shown at the Seminar Room at ArtSpace.

Through the use of creative arts activities, this Creative Communities project aimed to provide parents and the local community with unique opportunities to connect back to the schools and to further enhance and support school engagement.
It was heartening to meet and chat with principals and teachers from the schools who enthusiastic attendants despite the Sunday scheduling! Feedback was universally positive from schools’ staff, who take immense pride in the project, their student’s literary work as well as their own creative endeavours.
This project was a big success due to the hard work of The Song Room’s multi-talented Teaching Artist and Community Liaison Officer, Wanda Bennett whose local knowledge and networks were invaluable in connecting members of the communities. Thanks also to the wonderful management of this project by Program Coordinator Anna Carmody.
This project was proudly supported by Rio Tinto.
