Carlton Primary School and La Mama in the spotlight
Recently Victorian school students performed at La Mama Theatre as part of a new and exciting collaboration between The Song Room, Carlton PS, and La Mama Theatre. This partnership has seen students write their own work during weekly workshop facilitated by Teaching Artist, Mel Dodge, a professional actor and drama teacher.
The collaboration with La Mama Theatre has given these children the opportunity to perform in front of their peers, teachers and families in a professional theatre environment. Placement students from SEDA-Arts were on hand to help students with costumes, props and to operate the lighting system at the venue.
Acting Principal Mary Karayannis said she was “thrilled” with the calibre of Mel’s workshops and the resulting performances. Program Coordinator, Lena Mitchell said “It’s one thing to read about the history of a story such as Ned Kelly’s, but to form that understanding into a play, and then act it out on a stage like La Mama’s gives these children a learning experience that’s hard to forget”.
The thrill and joy was evident on all the student’s faces at the conclusion of their performances, with students embracing the opportunity to bow to their applauding audience who in return gave three very excited and rowdy cheers to Mel and La Mama Theatre. “The kids were fantastic at helping each other out with lines, making sure they had their props and encouraging each other” said Mel, “I was very proud of their work.”
Due to the success of this collaboration, planning is already underway for future Carlton Primary School shows at La Mama. And we can’t wait!
