Australian Playgroups get the ‘Reading Bug’
The importance of playgroups has been identified as a key contributor to children’s developmental outcomes. In 2010, The Song Room has been delivering a ‘Reading Bug’ to communities in NSW with an aim to enhance pre-literacy skills in 0-4 year olds and school readiness through social interaction with music and creative arts.
In partnership with Wesley Mission & Community Services & Families NSW, The Song Room delivered the Reading Bug to 5 preschools/kindergartens as well as some early childhood community groups in the Riverstone/Schofields area who otherwise would not have access to such opportunities
The Reading Bug is a costumed Teaching Artist who plays guitar, sings, and teaches nursery rhymes and story-telling. The Reading Bug makes books out of the children’s stories which the Early Learning Centre or playgroup can use again and again. The Song Room provides books and CDs of suitable nursery rhymes for various age groups.
