What Does The Song Room Online Membership Mean For Your School?
The aim of The Song Room Online is to provide your school and teachers with necessary resources to help you more confidently incorporate music and creative arts programs into your classrooms. The benefits of tailored music/arts programs for children’s educational and social engagement and development have been well documented, so The Song Room has developed a range of on-line and other teaching resources to help ensure all children have access to such opportunities.
The Song Room Online website is accessible to all teachers in member schools and has a range of online and other teaching materials that are updated on a regular basis for teachers to access and download for use in your school. The resources are designed particularly for schools without existing music/arts specialist teachers or programs, and to support generalist teachers to include creativity in their classroom curriculum for all students.
The Song Room Online includes teaching and curriculum resources you can download; information, advice and links; professional development opportunities for teachers; performance opportunities for children; and much more.
What else does The Song Room do?
In addition to The Song Room Online's membership resources, The Song Room also conducts a range of free, tailored and long-term workshop programs to provide more intensive support in some schools in disadvantaged regions and with special needs. The aim of The Song Room is to work in partnership with each school to create a self-sustainable music/arts program. This is done by conducting weekly workshops in each class for a minimum of 6 months along with other capacity building such as provision of instruments, resources and teacher professional development so each school can continue to deliver their own programs.
The Song Room has so far provided these workshops and other specialist programs to over 150,000 disadvantaged children and is currently providing these programs to around 200 schools per year. Our vision is that all Australian children have access to such opportunities, which this is a big challenge considering that there are currently over 700,000 children in Australia estimated to be missing out on specialist music education at school.
As a not-for-profit organisation, we provide free access to these intensive programs to those schools and communities in need with over 80% of our funds sourced from non-Government fundraising, so unfortunately we can’t offer them to all member schools at this stage.
Once your school is a member, and if they would like to work with us to develop such programs, you can complete the online request which will be assessed having regard to a range of factors (including funding availability). If you do have a Song Room workshop program in your school, there is also a section on the Membership website with resources to help you get the most out of your program.
