Excerpts from Literature Review prepared by The University of Melbourne for The Song Room Research Project

The Song Room research takes place at a time of burgeoning interest in the social, educational and community benefits of young people’s engagement in arts activities. There is a large and growing body of international literature examining links between high-quality school-based and community arts programs and the well-being of young people. Recent research focuses on the efficacy of arts programs for young people at risk of marginalisation and academic failure and the implications for social policy and practice. Seminal studies from North American and UK, and an increasing body of Australian research, are providing evidence of the pro-social impact of young people’s participation in arts programs.
