With the support of Xstrata Queensland, The Song Room placed a local, highly skilled Indigenous Teaching Artist, Barbra Adjei, in the Charters Towers and Townsville schools to deliver a tailored creative movement workshop program, where approximately 50% of the students in the cluster of schools are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island descent.
Barbra is a creative dance specialist, having graduated from NAISDA (National Aboriginal Islander Skills Association) Dance College in 2004. She has enjoyed extensive professional experiences including working with the Bangarra Dance Company Australian Regional and International Tours.
When over 1000 students, teachers and parents from communities across Victoria came together for Primary School Musical, the annual Song Room combined schools performance spectacular, at the Melbourne Town Hall in November 2009, it was a perfect illustration of the capacity of the corporate and philanthropic sectors to contribute to the work of schools and change the lives of disadvantaged students.
Western Australia – Perth Schools - Octagon Theatre Performance
Due to the great success of performances in other States, and the need for Perth schools to access high quality performance experiences, a combined schools concert was facilitated in November 2009. Teaching Artists spent a proportion of their workshop programs preparing an item for students to perform at the concert. A professional act, Tetrafide Percussion, was also booked for the day.
In collaboration with Federation Square, The Song Room’s Program Coordinators and Teaching Artists associated with the relevant schools in Victoria, The Song Room coordinated a wonderful Christmas performance on the Main Stage in Federation Square.
School Music Camps Bring Hunter Valley Schools to Life!
Over 500 students from the
Hunter
Valley
in NSW were singing from the same song sheet at music camps held to lift
school engagement and reduce juvenile crime. At the end of Term One this year, The
Song Room organised three separate, two-day music camps involving schools from
the upper and lower Hunter Valley Region. Schools from both past and present
Song Room workshops were invited to attend the camps.
The Song Room, and Complete Works Theatre Company have created a vibrant, interactive show aimed at exciting and engaging children in the world of language and the limitless creativity of the imagination with Poetry Alive! launched as part of the celebrations for Cultural Diversity Week at Federation Square’s BMW Edge in March this year.
