Scholarship student soars to new heights

The Song Room has lifted Indonesian student Nabila to new heights, including having the opportunity to share the stage with some of Australia’s finest musicians such as Doug deVries, Paul Williamson and Ray Pereira, through a Song Room scholarship program designed to identify and help outstanding students that show exceptional potential to pursue an artistic career.

Soon after her family’s arrival in Australia from Indonesia, Nabila started studying at the Western English Language School (WELS) in Braybrook, Victoria. One of The Song Room’s Teaching Artists, Duncan, facilitates music workshops at WELS and noticed her talent for singing immediately. Nabila’s crystal clear voice stood out from the crowd and within weeks of her arrival, Nabila was singing solo pieces with The Song Room Music Club. 

This talent has continued to be nurtured with Nabila receiving a Merit Scholarship in September through The Song Room Scholarship Program.  Nabila is now receiving weekly private voice lessons and further performance opportunities. These opportunities have included a Song Room showcase performance at WELS, and recently, the great experience of starring as a vocalist at The Big West Festival as part of the No Passport Required project. 

Nabila’s mother Yunyun thanked The Song Room and said:  “Nabila never gets such improvement in my country, she just likes singing but doesn't know what and how to improve… I'm happy Nabila now finds what she wants.”
