The SongRoom - News and Events

The Song Room indigenous programs celebrate significant outcomes

Over 400 children and parents from The Song Room schools in Queensland came together in Brisbane to celebrate the outcomes from the Creative Arts Indigenous Parents Engagement (CAIPE) program.

The event featured performances and presentations from students, including the Alani dancers; an official book launch of ‘How Magpie Found his Voice’ produced by the children and parents & a reading by Elder Aunty Matilda Bani; Nathan Roe's dance group the 'Inala Boys' with Song Room Teaching Artist Anthony Walker on didgeridoo; a showcase performance by 'Tjupurru'; and a special Art Exhibition featuring works produced over the course of the Song Room program.

The CAIPE program piloted a parental engagement program with the use of music, arts and storytelling to connect Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander parents, carers and children with their local community. The Song Room pilot CAIPE programs ran successfully in Brisbane (Inala), Mackay and Cunnamulla throughout 2011 and exciting research results on the impact of the program will be launched early in 2012.
