The SongRoom - News and Events

Western Sydney schools showcase their talents

This year, two TSR Inter-School’s Performance Events were held in Sydney on Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd of June. Over two days, three concerts were held hosting twelve schools and almost 2000 students from the Inner West, South Western and Greater Western Sydney.

Each of the current Song Room program schools were given the opportunity to showcase their talents by presenting a short performance piece, which was led by their Song Room Teaching Artist. This provided an opportunity for over 600 students to present the work were involved with in their Song Room programs.

The first Performance event was held at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith and included a professional performance from Shaun Parker and the Teenagers of Western Sydney titled The Yard. The Yard is a collaborative project between nationally renowned choreographer Shaun Parker and teenagers from schools across Western Sydney. The performance draws inspiration from William Geldings’ Lord of the Flies, taking these themes and breathing new life into them by way of the Australian school yard, ultimately finding unity in the diversity of culture, gender and ethnicity that pulsate within.

The second event moved to the South West of Sydney and was held at the Camden Civic Centre, where students and teachers were treated to a performance by the Murray Raine Puppets!
