The Great Gatsby Gala - Melbourne’s benevolent lend their support for disadvantaged kids despite the challenging economic climate

The Global Financial Crisis might mean that times are much tougher than usual, but that didn’t stop many of Melbourne’s corporate and philanthropic leaders from putting their best feet forward to help The Song Room take its vital programs to some of Australia’s most disadvantaged children and young people at The Great Gatsby Gala in the Regent Theatre’s Plaza Ballroom on April 30 this year.

Some of Australia’s most popular musical artists, including Tim Freedman and Tim Campbell escaped to another era, entertaining the guests and Mark Holden performed as Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Guests took to the Great Gatsby theme, dressing in an array of period costumes that added a touch of old world glamour to the evening.

A true highlight of the night were the performances by the students from Scared Heart Primary School who greeted the guests on arrival with Don’t Mean a Thing and Bo Diddley’s, Iko Iko, and the  students from Abbotsford Primary School who wooed the audience with a resounding version of Chatanooga Choo Choo.

The generosity of the guests and supporters was wonderful and with their help The Song Room raised over $170,000 to continue delivering its vital programs across Australia.

The Song Room thanks all of the guests who attended the Great Gatsby Gala and particularly all the supporters who gave so generously.

We know that giving in today’s environment is harder than when the economy is booming and there have been many demands on people’s generosity, however, the work of organisations such as ours, supporting the needs of our most vulnerable young Australians, is still important to sustain.
