Students Sing Among the Stars for this year’s Education Week Celebrations
‘Fly me to the moon and let me sing among the stars’ was the theme for this years’ Song Room Education Week Event. Celebrating the International year of Astronomy and the fortieth anniversary of man landing on the moon, students from eight
Melbourne schools came together to perform songs about the far away moon and stars. The
WesternEnglishLanguageSchool performed their version of Romeo and Juliet, the Star Crossed Lovers as directed by Teaching Artist Olivia Crang. Two refugee girl splayed the lead roles and with Juliet from
Burmaand Romeo from
Albania, it was a true example of star-crossed diversity.
The audience then formed a massed choir and sang Good Morning Starshine, a hit song from the musical Hair. This was an opportunity for students who have been engaged in Song Room programs to come together, to sing for and with each other and to enjoy a professional music and science performance: Rock Chick and Science Geek.
Proudly presented by The Song Room and travelling all the way from
Adelaide for the event, Rock Chick and Science Geek was a fascinating fusion of spectacular science and witty, upbeat, original, rock music. Balloons burst into balls of flame, kids were swallowed whole by bubbles, rockets were launched over the audience and icecream was made in an instant – all backed by a string of contemporary pop-rock songs.
Participating schools in the Education Week performance at Federation Square came from diverse geography and backgrounds including Western English Language school (WELS)) Wyndam outpost campus and Primary Schools such as Abbotsford, St Dominic’sin Broadmeadows, St Michael’s, North Melbourne, Carlton and Richmond West.
