The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Christ the King Primary School collaborate in a performance to rememberThe Song Room facilitated a wonderful artistic collaboration between The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Christ the King Primary School, Braybrook, and respected Song Room Teaching Artist/choreographer, Shannon Bott. From a selection of music to be performed at the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra's "Classic Kids" concert at Hamer Hall in Melbourne’s Arts Centre, The Song Room chose Percy Grainger's "Molly on the Shore" as the song with which the Teaching Artist worked with Christ the King grades 3 to 6 students to create a dance piece to different sections of the music.Rehearsed over a period of 6 weeks, The Song Room created a short film of the children’s amazing dance performance. This was played as a backdrop to the MSO’s live performance of “Molly on the Shore” for 2000 school children in Hamer Hall, including Christ the King students. At the end of the performance, the MSO acknowledged the Christ the King students to a cheering audience. Performances such as the Classic Kids Concert are an important part of The Song Room’s objective of providing access to at least one professional performance for children in its workshop programs. The first semester workshop program was also complemented by The Song Room running in-school Professional Development (PD) sessions with generalist teachers at the school on ways to integrate creative movement into the curriculum. PD sessions such as these help sustain creative arts in the curriculum once the workshop program has concluded.
