Then the awarded Mafumani Secondary School Choir from Limpopo, South Africa, gave a stunning performance and inspired the children with the energy and beauty of South African music which helped broaden the horizons for the South Africans and the Australian children alike.
The 12 Mafumani school choir members are all still completing their secondary schooling and range in age from 16 to 24, an indication of how poverty and apartheid prevented or interrupted schooling, which has been free in South Africa for only the past year. This was first time they have been out of South Africa, let alone overseas.
Many of the children from the attending Melbourne schools were recent arrivals in Australia and exposure to music and arts helps them in developing a sense of connection to their community, building self-esteem and expression and in encouraging positive communication and team work.

The Song Room’s programs are
particularly beneficial for migrant children as it has been shown that music
and arts assist these students to engage with their school community, improve
their literacy and encourage positive social cohesion and a sense of
belonging,”
“We were absolutely delighted to
have the renowned Mafumani Choir perform for the children as we know that
exposure to music and the arts delivers positive social outcomes for children.
