The SongRoom - News and Events

A Night at the Opera, Sydney Opera House

The magnificent Sydney Opera House was turned over to The Song Room on 31st of August to allow disadvantaged children from across Sydney to participate in an opera theatre event at this amazing venue during the day, and also to help raise funds for arts intervention programs with a fundraising dinner.

2,000 children from disadvantaged schools all around Sydney attended an opera theatre show in the Opera House’s Main Concert Hall. For many of these children it was their first visit to the Opera House let alone seeing a high-quality performance full of fun and laughter.

That evening many of Sydney’s leading corporate and philanthropic figures attended a major fundraising gala in the Opera House’s Northern Foyer with performances by some of Australia's best known contemporary musicians, including the sensational Tim Freedman from the Whitlam’s and the fabulous Vanessa Amorosi, as well as some opera fitting of the venue with Pot Pourri.

A fantastic highlight of the evening was the wonderful performance by the children of Tregear Public School who sang a song they composed themselves, and an inspiring speech from Tregear Principal, Russell Hawkins. The children were wonderfully coached and conducted by Song Room Teaching Artists James Paul and Sarah Spillane.

The Song Room thanks all of the guests who attended A Night at the Opera and particularly all the supporters who gave so generously. In its first ever major fundraising event in Sydney, The Song Room raised over $150,000 to help it expand its programs in NSW and nationally, which is a fantastic result.
