I Hear the Voices in the Air! “I Hear the Voices in the Air” was a statement written to The Song Room by a Grade Three boy in 2005 after his experience of being in a Song Room Choir. These words inspired a massed choral event sponsored by The Strategic Partnerships Program, Department of Education & Training and Australia Post. Three hundred children from seven Melbourne primary schools in lower socio-economic areas were joined together in song at the Melbourne Town Hall on Tuesday 14th November 2006.
This beautiful acoustic space maximized the children’s feeling of being immersed in the power of their own sound and enhanced their sense of connectedness as they sang interlocking parts of their shared songs. The Song Room provided a Teaching Artist in each of the schools for twenty weeks to prepare the choirs for the performance. Schools participating were from diverse geography and background and no access to specialist music teachers, including Carlton PS, Hastings Westpark PS, Fitzroy North PS, Brunswick North West PS, Noble Park English Language School and the Victorian College of Koorie Education. This program provided an opportunity for children across Melbourne to come together and share the joy of performing in an amazing venue for the first time. The Hon Lord Mayor John So joined The Song Room at the event to join in the celebrations.
