Music Helps Refugees Settle into Their New Home
New migrants experience cultural, socio-economic, language and
literacy barriers. Many are refugees and have endured lives of
displacement and confusion. Many have no first language literacy skills
and their cultural and educational backgrounds can be vastly different
from mainstream Australia.
In an innovative program, The Song Room uses music and performing arts to help new migrant and refugee children participate and engage effectively with the education system and to connect with the local community.
As part of Refugee Week on Friday 22 June 2007 at Rosina Theatre, Abbotsford Convent, Abbotsford, the children from the Collingwood English Language School performed songs they composed themselves for students from Alphington, Sacred Heart and Ruyton Schools.
